History:

- Formerly known as Rochegure, Rochesure, castle of Hautsegur dominate the valley of the river Ardèche and is located opposite side of Baturel bridge, crossing point since Roman times. Given its location, the castle tower, which houses the spiral staircase, would be the watch-tower of castle Ventadour located a few hundred meters to the east and is the oldest part of the castle. Date of 1126 is engraved on the lintel of the entrance door where you have also magnificent inscription:

Entrée principale du châteauNISI DOMINUS AEDIFICA VERIT DOMUM IN VANUM LABORA VERUNT QUI AEDIFICANT EAM which is nothing else than a quote from the first verse of psalm 126 reflecting "If this is not in Lord's name has been built this house, in vain have worked who have built"

It seems that the castle was partially destroyed during religious wars and rebuild in the late sixteenth century, probably under the auspice of the Lord Jean de Langlade, baron of Hawks, who lived from 1591. On the keystone overlooking the stables is engraved the following date: 13 1597 DE (Decembre 13, 1597) and on the lintel of a door on the first floor: 1598 20 AOUST (August 20, 1598)

Jean de Langlade, rich Lord, also owned the castle of St Cirgues en Montagne.
